Geography Education Research Sessions at 2019 AAG Annual Meeting

April 3, 2019 @ 8:00 am - April 7, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

Each year for the AAG Annual Meeting, NCRGE organizes and compiles a track of papers, posters, and panels focusing on geography education research. NCRGE is sponsoring this track to raise the visibility of research in geography education, grow the NCRGE research coordination network, and provide productive spaces for discussion about geography education research and what makes research in the field potentially transformative.

The track features a full-day symposium on Thursday, April 4:

Panel: Transformative Research in Geography Education
9:55 AM – 11:35 AM in Wilson A, Marriott, Mezzanine Level

This panel focuses on the work of NCRGE research coordination network members who received 2018 Transformative Research grants from NCRGE. The grantees are building research network in three areas: 1) international curriculum analysis, 2) geo-computational education, and 3) geography and civics. Information about 2019 research funding opportunities will also be shared.

Panel: Paradigms and Milestones in Geography Education: Looking Back, Looking Forward
1:10 PM – 2:50 PM in Washington 6, Marriott, Exhibition Level

This panel will examine the status of geography education research. The panel will feature a speaker offering a critical assessment of progress, limitations, and missed opportunities in relation to a major paradigm or milestone in the field. Additionally, discussants will present their own perspectives about lessons learned and future directions in the areas of assessment, geospatial technology and spatial thinking, learning progressions, and state geography and social studies standards.

Panel: Powerful Geography: A Progress Report
3:05 PM – 4:45 PM in Washington 6, Marriott, Exhibition Level

Powerful Geography is a multi-year research effort to inform the next generation of national and state standards for K-12 geography education. This session will feature results of pilot studies and workshops conducted with professional geographers, teachers, and social studies coordinators.
