NAEP Research Network: Educational Equity in the Social Studies

May 5, 2021

Dear Colleague:

The National Center for Research in Geography Education (NCRGE) is organizing a research network focused on educational equity in the social studies. The network will leverage data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to plan lines of research into persisting achievement gaps and inequalities in social studies outcomes.

NCRGE invites applications from researchers committed to interdisciplinary research involving all available NAEP social studies datasets (geography, US History, civics, economics). We welcome applications from individuals of all levels of experience working with NAEP data as well as joint applications from data analysts and subject matter experts.

Individuals selected to join the network will participate in a virtual research summit on August 3-4, 2021. The summit will provide a history of the NAEP assessment program and presentations by education researchers who have conducted quantitative studies using NAEP datasets. Participants will review summaries of prior NAEP research in the social studies and initiate plans for long-term collaborative research addressing inequality in social studies educational achievement and opportunity.

After the summit, network members will receive research stipends and an operating budget to support research preparations and planning. Additional virtual meetings with NCRGE staff will be held to coordinate activities and track progress toward goals, culminating in an in-person research conference in the summer of 2022 when network members will present the results of their planning activities. It is anticipated that the conference will result in publications and collaborative proposals for external research funding.

To apply for network membership, please send the following materials to Dr Michael Solem by June 15, 2021:

• A brief statement of interest (1-2 pages) that summarizes the expertise of the applicant(s) and the anticipated professional development value of participating in the network.
• Two-page bio sketches/CVs for each applicant.

Applicants will be notified of selections no later than June 30, 2021.

Transformative Research in Geography Education

The National Center for Research in Geography Education (NCRGE) issued calls for proposals from 2016-2019 to develop new collaborative and interdisciplinary research networks in geography education. Through this program, NCRGE aspires to strengthen geography education research processes and promote the growth of sustainable, and potentially transformative, lines of research. In the coming years NCRGE will continue to invest in these networks. New funding opportunities will be posted here as they become available.
