Dear Colleague Letter: Advanced Placement Human Geography

February 1, 2021

Dear Colleague:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the AP Human Geography (APHG) course.

The National Center for Research in Geography Education invites applications from researchers to join a comprehensive analysis of APHG course data. We intend to fund up to four researchers to carry out the study under the direction of Drs. Michael Solem and Richard G. Boehm, Co-Directors of the National Center.

Applicants should propose research into APHG exam scores and grade assignments from 2001 – present. Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

  • State by state comparisons
  • Grade level comparisons
  • Patterns and trends for different student groups
  • Comparisons with other AP subjects
  • Administrative structure of APHG courses
  • Etc.

Researchers selected to participate in the project will each receive a $4,000 grant, which is expected to be divided into a $3,000 honorarium and $1,000 operating fund. After completing the study, the research team will be expected to contribute to an overall report and multiple publications.

Individuals may apply for this research opportunity by submitting two items: 1) a current vita, and 2) a 500-word statement that specifies the research topic(s) of interest, relevant research experience, and the anticipated benefits of the research for geography education in the U.S.

Application materials must be received no later than February 15, 2021 at NCRGE headquarters. Include “APHG research study” in the subject line of the email.

Transformative Research in Geography Education

The National Center for Research in Geography Education (NCRGE) issued calls for proposals from 2016-2019 to develop new collaborative and interdisciplinary research networks in geography education. Through this program, NCRGE aspires to strengthen geography education research processes and promote the growth of sustainable, and potentially transformative, lines of research. In the coming years NCRGE will continue to invest in these networks. New funding opportunities will be posted here as they become available.
