NCRGE Sessions at AAG 2015

April 21, 2015 @ 8:00 am - April 25, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

The following NCRGE-project sessions have been scheduled at the 2015 AAG Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois:

1) Panel Session: Integrating Geography-based Resources, Materials, and Tools (RMT) into Pre-service STEM Courses, is scheduled on Thursday, 4/23/2015, from 5:20 PM – 7:00 PM in Picasso, Hyatt, West Tower, Bronze Level.

The National Center for Research in Geography Education has carried out a NSF funded RAPID research project to develop a resource, material, and tool (RMT) with a content focus on water and a critical ArcGIS component to be used in STEM teacher preparation courses. The utility and acceptance of the infusion of geospatial technologies into these pre-service courses was determined by the use of the Geospatial Thinking Scale. Early research findings provide a guideline for the development of a larger NSF Discovery Research K-12 grant application. Panelists and discussants will focus on the development and research activities related to the RMT followed by questions and input from the audience.

2) Panel Session: A Research Coordination Network for Geography Education, is scheduled on Friday, 4/24/2015, from 10:00 AM – 11:40 AM in Grand Suite 2 AB, Hyatt, East Tower, Gold Level.

This session will provide a progress report on the NCRGE, including an overview of current research projects and a preview of upcoming events sponsored by NCRGE. The session will include a mini-workshop to generate ideas for building the NCRGE research coordination network.

3) Panel Session: Preparing for learning progressions research on maps, geospatial technology, and spatial thinking, is scheduled on Friday, 4/24/2015, from 1:20 PM – 3:00 PM in Soldier Field, Hyatt, West Tower, Bronze Level.

The panel will feature members of the GeoProgressions network in a discussion of the following topics: 1) state-of-the-art approaches to learning progressions research, 2) examples of learning progressions applications in geography, 3) resources available to assist researchers in doing learning progressions research, 4) thinking critically about learning progressions and their potential impacts in education, and 5) building a national research coordination network for learning progressions in geography education.

4) Geography and Online Education

NCRGE is a co-sponsor of the many paper, panel and keynote sessions scheduled for this special thematic track at the 2015 AAG Annual Meeting.
